New USAFA Memorial Pavilion…

HB&A was proud to receive the 2011 People’s Choice Award for the Southeast Asia and Vietnam War Memorial Pavilion at the AIA Southern Colorado Chapter Design Awards.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) graduating class of 1970 funded this Design/Build for a Memorial Pavilion structure of about 1,225 SF (35′x35′) located at the United States Air Force Academy along the Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail is meant to leave a lasting impression of the USAFA’s strong heritage on all who visit. Along this trail are memorials to the different combat missions USAFA graduates served in, from the Vietnam War to present time.

The Southeast Asia and Vietnam Memorial Pavilion honors USAFA graduates’ service, sacrifice, and contributions throughout the S.E. Asia conflict. The memorial displays a bronze three dimensional plaque, approximately eight square feet in size, highlighting battles and other significant events of the war. Electronic displays provide additional historic information about the military conflict and USAFA graduates. Outside the building is a 10 feet tall by 70 feet long memorial wall of polished black granite; which serves as a visual reminder of the Vietnam War Memorial; and a nine foot high blue glass wall representing The Long Blue Line, the ultimate sacrifice 173 graduates have made in service to the United States.
